lesbian community (s)
As a young woman coming out I was in awe of older and wiser lesbians I saw around me. I found the community (s) I was invloved with exciting, safe, and extremely supportive. At the time I had no idea of all the differrent 'types' of women within the lesbian community (s), and it wasn't until I moved to a larger city that I realised how wide and varied this group of women was. What an eye opener:-)

The internet has enabled different groups of lesbians and queer women to share experiences and support. I found a supportive community on a board for married women and girlfriends of married women. It provides support and help for women from all over the world that is not available elsewhere.
Virtual communities have some quite different characteristics to IRL communities. Not the least of these is that a degree of anonymity is possible; giving some semblance of security for women in the first stages of coming out.
